Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash just outside Stonegate railway station. Parking is available in the stations pay and display carpark. Some limited roadside parking may be available nearby, but any spaces are likely to be occupied during the working week. 


Stonegate is on the Hastings Line between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings. It has two platforms and two tracks and is a popular station for commuters heading for London.

Authorised in 1846, the Hastings route opened in stages. Tunbridge Wells to Robertsbridge opening in September 1851. The opening of the new route included the introduction of a this new station.Originially named Witherenden after the nearby hamlet it was renamed Ticehurst Road in December of the same year. It wasn't until 1947 that the station was awarded it's current name of Stonegate.

In 2014 a commuter who travelled into London from Stonegate was caught out by ticket inspecters. The city executive was found to be using an unvalidated Oyster Card over a period of 5 years. In an out of court settlement he was forced to pay over £42,000 in dodged fares back to the relevant train company. This is believed to be highest dodged fare known in Britain.

Stonegate station is 43 miles 66 chains (70.53 km) from Charing Cross in London.
