Earthcache 5km Run / Walk Logo
We are all about helping fellow EarthCachers enjoy the great outdoors. This year, as part of our 10 year celebrations, we have a special Virtual 5km run in which you can participate as an individual or team.
What you have to do is run or walk a 5km (3.1 miles) path starting at OR ending at an active EarthCache on any of the days over which the run is being held (Friday 3 October through till Monday 13 October 2014).
The start will be at the Earthcache in Giba Gorge (Mhlatuzana River - Size does count - GC4R5M7) and the finish will be at Giba Cafe (The Mega HQ).
You do not need to log the earthcache during the run - it can be saved for when you complete the 10-icon walk. Route sheets will be provided to all participants who have posted a "Will Attend" log.
You time yourself from start to finish and take a photo of yourself holding a race 'bib' sign with the GC code of the EarthCache, and at the end of your run, complete a simple form and upload your photo.
Everyone who completes the run and uploads a photo will be sent an icon via email that you can display on your caching pages or website.

How to participate
All participants must agree to and follow the Official Run Rules printed below and on the bib.
By printing off the bib or T shirt or by completing any of the online forms, you have agreed to follow all the Official Run Rules.

Official Run Rules
- You should consult with your medical practitioner before the run to ensure that you are healthy enough to participate.
- Your run must start at or end at an active EarthCache.
- Your run must cover at least 5km.
- You must keep your own accurate time.
- You must run on a safe route and not interfere with private property, roadways or other activities.
- You assume all risks associated with this activity and release the EarthCache program, the Geological Society of America , geocaching.com and any associated organization or individuals from any liability.

In conjunction with this event, we will be supporting the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos.
On October 4th people in cities throughout the world will march as one voice to save Elephants and Rhinos. The countdown to their extinction has begun - unless action is taken now, we will lose these majestic, highly intelligent, and emotionally sentient creatures FOREVER.
Up to 50,000 Elephants are being killed every year so their tusks can be carved into ivory trinkets. A Rhino is slaughtered once every 9-11 hours for Rhino Horn. Their only hope for survival lies in an immediate end to the ivory and rhino horn trade (both "legal" and "illegal") and a meaningful opportunity to recover from decades of mass slaughter.
Please join the global march on Oct 4th to call for an end to the killing and a ban on ivory and rhino horn before it's too late.
