Wartenberški zaklad / Wartenberg treasure Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

ENG: We visited all the way points and collected puzzles to clean them and prepare them for the spring. At the final point we discovered the cache is missing. And not only missing, all the objects that were part of the cache were gone - even the screws that fixed the cache to the tree. Disappointed with this action we archive the cache. Thank you for visiting.

Joštom in Šmarjetno goro zgradili dvorec Kucna.

V letu 2012 so območje Starega Gradišča pričeli raziskovati arheologi, ki so s sodobnimi 3D računalniškimi tehnikami uspeli rekonstruirati sam grad in okolico. Vse, kar je ostalo od omenjene odprave, so zapisi o njenem obstoju in skupek dokumentov, najdenih na domu enega izmed članov.

Archeological report

The area around Kranj and Škofja Loka was in the 12th century a property of Bishops of Freising. To protect their caravans, that traveled from Škofja Loka to Kranj and have to cross the river Sava at its shallowest point near Okroglo, they built a mansion at the hill Kucna, located between Sveti Jošt and Šmarjetna gora. In the response to this mansion and the desire for robbing the caravans at ford, their opponents and neighbors Counts of Ortenburg in the middle of the 12th century build a castle Wartenberg. Between years 1145 and 1192 there lived lord Henrik de Wartenberg. After his death the castle went into hands of Oton II of Ortenburg, but he has to depart on the crusade. During that time the Bishops of Freising bought the castle and the land around it, but the Counts of Ortenburg retrieved it back. They rebuild the castle and once again started the attacks on the caravans. After years of internal battles the Counts of Freising bought the castle and destroyed it completely so it could not been rebuild.

During the years of plundering the Counts of Ortenburg collected an enormous wealth. They hid it in the castle or nearby. But at the destruction of the castle Bishops of Freising did not report of any treasure. The castle was by their words decorated in the Spartan military base and not as a center of incredible wealth. The local people therefor believe that the Counts of Ortenburg hid their wealth somewhere in the steep and perforated land of the hill Staro Gradišče. But despite of many organized and solo expeditions the treasure was not found. The prevailing opinion of the archeological society is, the Bishops of Freising took the treasure in silence and paid the workers for their discretion.

In the year 2012 a group of archeologist started to research the area of Staro Gradišče. They managed to reconstruct the castle Wartenberg with the use of modern 3D computer techniques and preserve its glory for the future generations. The computer simulation showed certain discrepancies at the buildings as well as in surrounding lands. A special group was formed to study the situation of mentioned discrepancies in the field. A part of their task was also to discover the mystery of the missing treasure. The group unfortunately did not return from the given mission. Every trace about them was lost. All that has left of this group are the notes about their existence and some documents, found at the home of one of the group member.
