Rest a while and enjoy the view of a quintesential English duck pond in the heart of this delightful Hertfordshire Village.
The duck pond is situated in the middle of the village of Barkway on the side of the B1368 High Street which used to be the main coaching route between London and Cambridge. Reputedly listed in the Doomesday book as Birchwig (Birch Way), Bakway has a number of 15th and 16th century properties with thatched roofs. A pictorial sign on the edge of the pond shows some of the historical attractions in the village. On the opposite side of the road from the duck pond is the Grade II listed Bath House. The village has a pub, a school and a garage. Other historical features include a very nice church. In the church yard is the grave of Robert Dimsdale (1828-1898) a Conservative politician and sixth baron of the Russian Empire a barony confered by Catherine the Great of Russia in recognition of services rendered by his ancestor Thomas Dimsdale (1712-1800) who innoculated her and her son against small pox. Next to the church is the wagon wash.
