Games in our Magazine -> Solitaire Hangman Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

charliewhiskey: Not only is the container missing, but the feature that held it is gone too. There isn't a good place to hide a cache here and, besides, now that there is a disc golf course here it's a bit hazardous for non-disc-golf-players to walk the paths.

Thanks to all who visited, and for the Favorite points.

Geocache Description:

The cache isn't at the posted coordinates. You must solve the puzzle to get the coordinates. No hard math or obscure trivia here - this is a puzzle for you wordsmiths out there.

CrunchyFrog83's "Games on our Shelf" series of puzzles reminded me of a magazine I have loved ever since it first came out in 1977: Games. It features a wide variety of verbal and visual puzzles, brainteasers, trivia quizzes, and many other features, as well as reviews of new board games and electronic games. One regular feature I enjoy is "Solitaire Hangman".

As in the two-player version of Hangman, the object of this solitaire challenge is to guess the letters in a word before being "hanged." To begin, choose any letter of the alphabet that you think might be in word l below. Suppose you pick E. Go to the Letter Chart below and find the number listed in row E of column l (because you are working on word l). You'll find number 26.

Now look in box number 26 in the Position Chart (to the right of the Letter Chart below) and you'll find the number 4. This means the letter E occurs in the fourth position (and nowhere else) in word l. If a letter occurs more than once in a word, the Position Chart will show all its locations within the word. (Follow the red lines in the example below.)

If you look up a letter on the Position Chart and find it has the number 0, then that letter does not appear in the word. As a penalty for an incorrect guess, draw part of a stick figure below the scaffold beside the word blanks. (See the blue lines in the example above.)

On your first incorrect guess, draw the head; on the second, the body. Keep going as needed, adding arms, legs, eyes, mouth, feet, and (as I've done in times of extreme dimness), fingers. If you make 6 incorrect guesses, you are "hanged". If you make more incorrect guesses than that, you are REALLY hanged.

If you can identify 8 of the 12 words below before being hanged, either you're psychic or you have a remarkable gift for words. You can print the puzzle and charts from the image links further below.

As of November 3, 2020, this was moved slightly, back to its original spot. The checker and hint have been updated. If you solved it before then and don't want to resolve it, add 0.002 to north and 0.003 to west, or walk about 20' west, to the item in the hint.

Coordinates at GZ are bouncy. The terrain rating and finding hint are there to help. DON'T GO DOWN THE BANK.
