Geocache Description:

Cache #3

This cache is dedicated to P.O.W. Eugene DeBruin (April 1, 1933 - c.1968). It is interesting to know he is a Wisconsin native and was born and raised here in the Kaukauna area. In fact, his family's home was near the northern end of this road, and of his nine siblings, his sister still lives very nearby.

There has been much said about this man's life, especially his adventurous spirit, service to others, and dedicated commitment to improving this world. Gene served in the Air Force for four years after graduating high school and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon completing service to his nation, he enrolled in and graduated from college with a degree in forestry. He then sought adventure as a smokejumper in Alaska. After his time there, he moved to Mexico to learn Spanish with the idea to become a writer.

While there, he contemplated an opportunity to serve in the Peace Corps but declined. Instead, Eugene decided to serve as crew member for Air America. On September 5th while flying a mission over Laos, his C-46 aircraft was shot down by ground fire. He and three others were able to parachute to safety, but they were immediately captured. During his time in captivity, Gene attempted to escape at least two times as his will to be free remained strong through years of subjugation.

The second escape attempt witnessed Gene's compassion and dedication to others. The group's plans were threatened by the illness of one of its members; the group debated leaving him behind. However, Gene stood firm beside his malaria-stricken friend and refused to leave him alone. Gene determined to help his friend escape! Sadly, the events of Gene's life from this point on are somewhat unclear. There is evidence to show he was recaptured and transferred to another prison but beyond this little is known.

Furthermore, the movie Rescue Dawn tells this story from a perspective which shows Gene in unflattering and inaccurate detail. His family and compatriot Dieter Dengler, who participated in the second escape, have attempted to clarify and share the truth. Gene DeBruin was an honorable and self-less man. Please remember him and the sacrifices all P.O.W.'s have made. Find some! Get some!

*The cache is located in the front yard of a private residence, very near the road (with permission). Please do not wander into the nearby wooded area. A pipe wrench may help you to escape the contents of this cache. Please resecure with hands only.
