It's the 1st of August, 2014, and there are many good reasons to have a Geocaching Event on this date, celebrating events that even have a connection to geocaching, albeit a very tenuous one.
1. In 30 BC, Augustus Caesar entered Alexandria, Egypt, bringing it under the control of the Roman Empire. It is debatable whether this was a good thing or not, but he did give us the name of the month.
2. On August 1st, 1774 Joseph Priestly, English theologian and chemist, discovered oxygen. So we all owe him our lives! What would we breathe if not for him? The least we can do is have an event to say “thank you” to this man that saved us all.
3. In 1793, on August 1st, France became the first country to use the Metric System.
4. In 1893, a new London Bridge opened.
5. Colorado was admitted as the 38th state, on August 1st, 1876.
6. On August 1st, 1957, the United States and Canada formed the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
7. Today: This event provides an opportunity, for West Sound cachers, to log an event on the first day of August. If they meet the other requirements, they will then complete "The 7 Souvenirs of August" challenge, on the very first day of August.
If you haven't heard about the "7 Souvenirs of August Challenge" yet, here is a link to the info:

Please log a "will Attend" if you plan to come, so we have something of a head count! We're hoping to see lots of Kitsap cachers there, as well as some Olympic Peninsula people. Everyone is invited to attend, even if you're not participating in "The 7 Souvenirs of August" challenge. This will be, at the very least, a really fun gathering, with the added bonus of "breaking bread" together!
UPDATE!!!! We are planning on holding a raffle at about 8:30PM. If you have anything you'd like to donate to it, it would be very appreciated! Everyone will get a ticket for attending the event and donators will get one extra ticket for each donation they bring.
