São Jorge - Patrono Mundial do Escutismo
S. Jorge (séc. III-IV) é um dos mais conhecidos santos da Igreja, e a sua reputação continua viva, em especial no Oriente, mas também um pouco por todo o mundo. Não há quaisquer pormenores históricos exatos sobre a vida deste santo da Igreja, sabendo-se, contudo, que o seu culto se espalhou rapidamente a partir da Palestina.
As lendas em torno desta figura insigne descrevem-no, geralmente, como cavaleiro da Capadócia (atual Turquia) que resgatou uma donzela de um dragão, gesto esse que levou ao batismo de milhares de pessoas. É de referir que o pormenor lendário sobre a existência de um “dragão” foi um acrescento medieval à lenda já existente sobre S. Jorge. Mais tarde, vítima da perseguição do Imperador Diocleciano (244-311 d.C.), terá sido torturado e decapitado devido à fé que sempre e destemidamente defendeu. O seu martírio é celebrado liturgicamente pela Igreja no dia 23 de Abril.
São Jorge e o Escutismo
Persistem algumas dúvidas relativamente à origem da devoção a S. Jorge em Inglaterra, mas há dados que apontam no sentido de ter sido considerado protetor da Ordem da Jarreteira, já no reinado de Eduardo III, no século XIV.
Tendo o escutismo nascido em Inglaterra, Baden-Powell confiou, ao mesmo santo protetor, o movimento escutista mundial. Por isso, S. Jorge é o patrono mundial do escutismo, representando a unidade dos escuteiros do mundo inteiro e, simultaneamente, o desejo de uma vida fiel e corajosa no cumprimento da vontade de Deus. Atualmente S. Jorge é o patrono de Inglaterra, dos soldados e dos escuteiros, e há mesmo numerosas igrejas em todo o mundo a ele dedicadas.
Lenda de S. Jorge
Baden Powell sempre comparou os escuteiros de hoje aos bravos cavaleiros de outros tempos, pois os dois se comprometiam voluntariamente, seguindo um Código de Honra ou uma Lei, praticando o bem numa entrega total, e particularmente o serviço aos mais necessitados, protegendo sempre os fracos e oprimidos. S. Jorge é o único santo cavaleiro, pelo que S. Jorge sempre foi o santo padroeiro dos cavaleiros, sendo também o santo protetor de Inglaterra. No entanto existe uma lenda, que mostra os valores que definem um cavaleiro e um escoteiro, a generosidade e a valentia, que são sempre reconhecidos e louvados. Corria o ano de 303, quando nasceu S. Jorge na zona da Capadócia, onde se situa atualmente a Turquia. Ainda novo alistou-se como Cavaleiro, e graças à sua entrega e esforço se fez notar.
Um dia, em Silene, uma antiga cidade da Líbia, soube que diariamente um dos seus habitantes, tirado à sorte, era oferecido a um horrendo dragão que o devorava furiosamente, e só assim era possível acalmar a besta.
Por razão do acaso, nesse mesmo dia da chegada do Santo Cavaleiro, Cleolinda, a lindíssima e formosa filha do Rei, fora a escolhida para ser sacrificada à besta. S. Jorge como cavaleiro, nunca poderia permitir que uma atrocidade destas tomasse lugar, e ficou extremamente indignado por ninguém tomar uma posição. Nesse mesmo momento S. Jorge prometeu a si mesmo pôr termo à situação, mesmo que isso custasse a sua própria vida. Rapidamente dirigiu-se ao pântano onde habitava o dragão. S. Jorge embora intimidado com os urros do dragão, nunca vacilou, e empunhando a sua lança trespassou o dragão com um golpe fulminante! Assim terminava a triste sina da cidade de Silene, assim como a da sua bela princesa, que finalmente fora salva. O Rei ficou eufórico ao ver a sua amada filha poupada ao horrível sacrifício, e em forma de agradecimento quis oferecer a mão da princesa ao seu nobre salvador. Mas S. Jorge, prometera perante si e perante Deus, lutar o mal até que este fosse banido da face da terra, recusando assim o tentador convite. Partiu, mas prometeu voltar assim que a sua jornada terminasse para desposar a linda Cleolinda.

Saint George - Patron of World Scouting
S. Jorge (III-IV century) is one of the most popular saints of the Church, and its reputation is still alive, especially in the East, but also all over the world. There are no exact historical details about the life of this holy church, knowing, however, that his cult spread rapidly from Palestine.
The legends surrounding this figure distinguished describe it generally as a knight of Cappadocia (modern Turkey) who rescued a maiden from a dragon, this gesture that led to the baptism of thousands of people. It should be noted that the legendary detail about the existence of a "dragon" was a medieval add to the already existing legend about St. George. Later, the victim of the persecution of Emperor Diocletian (244-311 AD), had been tortured and beheaded because of the faith he always fearlessly defended. His martyrdom is celebrated liturgically by the Church on April 23.
St. George and Scouting
Some doubts persist regarding the origin of the devotion to St. George in England, but there are data pointing towards being considered protector of the Order of the Garter, in the reign of Edward III in the fourteenth century.
Having scouting born in England, Baden-Powell entrusted the same patron saint, the world scouting movement. Therefore, St. George is the patron saint of Scouting worldwide, representing the unity of scouts from around the world and simultaneously the desire for a faithful and courageous life in the fulfillment of God's will. Currently St. George is the patron saint of England, soldiers and scouts, and there are even numerous churches around the world dedicated to him.
Legend of St George
Baden Powell Scouts when compared to today's brave knights of other times, as both undertook voluntarily following a Code of Honor or a law, doing good, and particularly the service to the needy, always protecting the weak and oppressed. St. George is the only holy knight, so St. George has always been the patron saint of knights, is also the patron saint of England. However there is a legend that shows the values that define a Knight and a Boy Scout, generosity and courage, which are always recognized and praised. It was the year 303, when St. George was born in Cappadocia area, which is currently located in Turkey. Yet again enlisted as a Knight, and thanks to their delivery and effort is noted.
One day in Silene, an ancient city of Libya, learned that one of its daily inhabitants, drawn by lot, was offered to a hideous dragon that devoured him furiously, and so it was only possible to calm the beast.
By reason of the accident, the same day of the arrival of the Holy Knight, Cleolinda, the beautiful, beautiful daughter of the King, had chosen to be sacrificed to the beast. St. George as a knight, would never allow such an atrocity to take place, and was extremely indignated that no one took a position. At the same moment St. George promised himself put an end to the situation, even if it cost his own life. Quickly went to the swamp where the dragon lived. S. Jorge although intimidated with the Dragon roars, never wavered, and wielding his spear pierced the dragon with a massive bang! Thus ended the sad fate of the city of Silene, as well as its beautiful princess, who had finally been saved. The King was overjoyed to see his beloved daughter spared the horrible sacrifice, and wanted to offer a way of thanking the princess' hand to his noble savior. But St. George, promised before himself and before God, to fight evil until he was banished from the earth, thus rejecting the tempting invitation. Left, but promised to return as soon as his journey was complete in order to marry the beautiful finish Cleolinda.
All Scouts should resemble S. Jorge: facing the difficulties and dangers boldly, with determination, commitment and will to win, taking the fight to the end.
