Geocache Description:

All Saints

The parish of Horseheath lies in the south–eastern part of Cambridgeshire and is the highest parish in the county (rising up to 300ft). The Church of ALL SAINTS stands 350 yards north of the A1307 Cambridge-Haverhill road which bypasses the village.

Most of the present Church dates from the 1300s but look carefully and you will see in the walls, pieces of stone with a « chevron »pattern and this is evidence of an earlier Norman Church.

Inside, the Nave is an extraordinary space. It is very tall, and as wide as it is high. There are no Aisles. The huge windows fill it with light in an excellent example of the Perpendicular style.

Walking into the Chancel you pass through the medieval wooden screen (repaired in the 1880s; traces of old paintwork are still visible on some of the panels). A staircase used to lead through the doorway in the wall on the left to a gallery or Rood Loft across the Church. On the floor are what look like pieces of the medieval stone altar.

A 4 ft long brass on the floor attracts brass rubbing enthusiasts from all over the country. It is set into a Purbeck marble matrix but any inscriptions are missing. It is believed to be a memorial to Sir William de Audley who died in 1365. Other authorities say it commemorates Sir John de Argentine who died 1382.
