Bison were brought to the park as a living memorial to the Wild West in 1890. They were moved to the area, you see now, in 1899. They used to share the meadow with elk, sheep, deer, and goats. At one point, there were only 3 bison left. An infusion of donations allowed the purchase of 7 new calves to bolster the herd, and improve the paddock. Just one more thing that is uniquely San Francisco.
