South Bank Chena River, about 35 miles East of Fairbanks
Located on one of Alaska's scenic wilderness rivers, this cache presents an access challenge. Can be done in a day. In summer one will canoe/raft/kayak to the site down easy class one riffles. Beware log jam at N 64 54.124 W 146 28.592. In winter a dogteam, snowmachine or intrepid trip on skis or snowshoes will be required. Multiple river access points are found along Chena Hot Springs Road. A final scramble up a steep permafrost lens containing fossils of Pleistocene mammoths, bison, horse, etc will plunge one into a stunted black spruce forest. Alternatively, one may choose to land on the gravel bar on river left, a quarter of a mile downstream and walk back on the game trail. A very short stumble later and one arrives at the site. Nice beach across river from site for lunch or camp. A bicycle in the raft will get you back to your rig. Cache initially contains: bug dope (you will need it in summer), a hand warmer (you will need it in winter), Bauer hockey puck, Samsung 9324 SEL memory card, "A Most Hostile Mountain" by Jon Waterman, Jeff Foxworthy CD, two reeelly good cigars and a lighter, the logbook with pencils, and a disposable camera (please photo self and leave in box). No edibles in this cache please, this is bear country. This is State land, fossils are not to be removed.
