About this Chapel:
The Purton Stoke Society was formed in the year 1830 (approx.) In February 1832 a site opposite the old Post Office was obtained and a chapel costing £160 was built to seat 84 people. With a membership of 26 the heavy debt of £150 became a burden. However with great determination, in 1857 the debt was all paid off.
In 1868 it was decided to move to another site and that building was pulled down and the materials used to build the present chapel. It is said that the local "Gents" who had horses were unwilling to lend them, so the members of the chapel themselves loaded up the bricks and with a whoop and a shout, the "human horses" rushed them up the little hill on to the building site.
The present building held 140 and cost £273 of which £98 was left as a debt in 1868 when it was opened.
The average number in the congregation was 27 with this figure being more than doubled on special occasions. A friendly, family spirit prevailed within the chapel during service and no one was allowed to leave a service without a handshake or a friendly "word", unless of course they sat at the back and made a quick get-a-way. In 1957 overhead electrical heating was installed and the coke stove removed.
It was sold in 2012 and is now a private residence.
