Diese Serie ist dem Ybbser Hochwasserschutz gewidmet. Nach dem Hochwasser im Jahr 2002 wurden die Bemühungen, einen Hochwasserschutz für Ybbs an der Donau zu errichten, verstärkt. Im Frühjahr 2013 wurde er schließlich fertiggestellt. Keine Minute zu früh. Denn Anfang Juni 2013 regnete es in ganz Mitteleuropa in Strömen und die Donau schwoll an. Der Höchststand der Donau war in Ybbs sogar noch höher als beim "Jahrhunderthochwasser" 2002. Das vom Hochwasserschutz erfasste Gebiet blieb trotzdem fast gänzlich trocken. Angesichts der Hochwasserschäden von 2002 in der Höhe von rd. 40 Mio. Euro und der Errichtungskosten von 25 Mio. Euro kann man das Projekt jetzt schon als wirtschaftlich erfolgreich betrachten.
Diese Cache-Serie hat ursprünglich 6 Locations rund um den Hochwasserschutz umfasst.

Leider sind 5 davon mittlerweile aufgrund verstärkter Muggeltätigkeit und des dadurch erforderlichen hohen Aufwands archiviert worden. Wir möchten euch dennoch einen kurzen Überblick über die einzelnen Stationen geben. Außer der noch aktiven Station 2 muss keine davon besucht werden, um das Finale zu heben. Vielleicht interessiert es euch ja trotzdem:
Station 1: Das Rückhaltebecken des Griesheimerbaches
Durch Ybbs fließen 2 Bäche: Der Greisheimerbach mündet mitten in Ybbs in den Mühlbach. Beide Bäche transportieren gemeinsam im Hochwasserfall wesentliche Mengen an Wasser durch die Stadt und in weiterer Folge in die Donau. Um die Wassermassen bei der Pumpstation in Angern in die Donau pumpen zu können ohne dass ganz Ybbs überschwemmt wird, wurde dieses riesige Rückhaltebecken geschaffen.
Um die Wassermassen, die über den Griesheimerbach und den Mühlbach durch Ybbs fließen bewältigen zu können wurde in Angern bei der Mündung des Mühlbaches eine Pumpstation errichtet. Insgesamt gibt es 6 Pumpwerke mit einer Gesamtkapazität von 11 m³/Sekunde.
Station 3: Der Hafen
Entlang der Donau wurde eine lange Mauer errichtet. Um den Menschen dennoch freie Sicht und Zugang zur Donau zu gewähren, wird diese durch mobile Hochwasserschutzwände ergänzt. Der Hafen, stromabwärts der letzte Bereich dieser Mauer, markiert gleichzeitig ihren niedrigsten Punkt, quasi eine "Solleinflussstelle". Dies dient dazu, die Wassermassen auch noch etwas kontrollieren zu können, wenn sie eigentlich schon zu hoch sind. Die Stadtgemeinde Ybbs hat die Gelegenheit der Hochwasserschutzbaumaßnahmen genutzt um den Hafenbereich umzugestalten und eine neue Slipanlage zu errichten.
Station 4: Sperre der B25
Wenn die Pegelstände ansteigen, wird auch die Bundesstraße B25 abgesperrt. Eine Durchfahrt ist ab diesem Zeitpunkt nicht mehr möglich.
Station 5: Der Wall
Aufgrund der geografischen Lage von Ybbs an der Donau, geht die Hochwassergefahr nicht nur von der Donau aus, sondern auch vom Ybbsfluss, der im Ötschergebiet entspringt und über Waidhofen und Amstetten beachtliche Wassermengen mit sich bringt. Um diese Massen aus Ybbs fernzuhalten wurde von der B25 weg ein ca. 1,5 km langer Wall errichtet bzw. wurde der bestehende Wall erhöht. Der Wall schützt vor allem den Ortsteil Oberau, der früher immer wieder massiv vom Hochwasser betroffen war.
Station 6: Die Ableitung des Mühlbaches in die Ybbs
Wie auch schon zuvor beschrieben ist eines der Probleme im Zusammenhang mit dem Hochwasser der durch die Stadt fließende Mühlbach, der sich mit dem Griesheimerbach vereinigt. Um die zusammenkommenden Wassermengen in Angern in die Donau pumpen zu können, kann hier der gesamte Mühlbach in die Ybbs abgeleitet werden.
Wenn ihr alle Caches gehoben habt, gibt es noch einen Bonus-Cache für euch. Die benötigten Bonuszahlen findet ihr in den einzelnen Dosen.
Besonders empfehlenswert ist es, die Serie mit dem Fahrrad zu absolvieren.
Das Finale
Die Koordinaten des Listings haben nichts mit dem Cache-Standort zu tun. Sie weisen nur auf ein wesentliches Element des Hochwasserschutzes, das durchaus sehenswert ist. An dieser Stelle war jedoch aufgrund der geringen Abstände zu anderen Caches kein Listing möglich. Es handelt sich dabei um die Prallwand an der Donaulände, die gleichzeitig den neu gestalteten Eingang zur Altstadt vom Parkplatz aus darstellt.
Die Donau nimmt bei Hochwasser nicht nur viel Wasser, sondern auch andere schwimmbare Gegenstände, wie Äste, Baumstämme oder sogar Container mit. Deshalb ist es an dieser Stelle nicht möglich mit mobilen Wänden zu operieren. Die Prallwand besteht bis auf einen schmalen Durchgang aus massivem Beton.

This series of caches is dedicated to the flood protection system of Ybbs. Right after the big flood of 2002, the local govenment enforced the efforts to implement a flood control system for the city of Ybbs. In spring 2013 it was finally finished. Not a minute too early. In the beginning of June 2013 it was pouring all over Central Europe and the water rose to a level even slightly above the flood of 2002. However, thanks to the flood protection system, the city remained almost completely dry. Given that the damage of the 2002 flood was running into about 40 million Euros, the construction cost of about 25 mill. Euros can be considered a worthwhile investment already.
Originally, this series lead to six key elements of the flood protection system of Ybbs an der Donau.
Stage 1: Rückhaltebecken (detention basin)
Stage 2: Die Pumpe (the pump)
Stage 3: Der Hafen (the port)
Stage 4: Sperre B25 (blockage of the B25)
Stage 5: Der Wall (the floodbank)
Stage 6: Ableitung Mühlbach (diversion of the Mühlbach)
Unfortunately, due to high muggle traffic and the resulting work load five stages had do be archived. We still want to provide a short description of the now unavailable stages. Other than the still acive stage 2 non of those location need to be visited to get the bonus cache. They are still worth being visited.
Stage 1: detention basin for the Griesheimer Bach
There are 2 streams running through Ybbs. The Griesheimer Bach leads to the Mühlbach which later flows into the Danube. In case of floods, both streams transport considerable masses of water through the city. In order to beeing able to pump the masses into the Danube river, the Mühlbach gets diverted into the Ybbs river and the Griesheimerbach is retained in this detention basin, if necessary.
In order to handle the flooding water of the Griesheimerbach and the Mühlbach, which both go through the city of Ybbs, the water pumps in Angern were established. In sum there are 6 pumps with a capacity of 11 m³ per second.
Stage 3: The Harbour
Along the Danube river a Wall was errected. To provide access to the river, there are mobile walls that can be built up in case of emergencies. The harbour is the last section of the wall down the river. At this point the wall has the lowest level, so floods that get even higher as the protection system can cope with, can spill into the city in a more controlled way at this point. The city of Ybbs has chosen to completely rebuild the harbour while the flood protection was contstructed and built a new slipway
Stage 4: Blockage of the B25
If the water levels rise above a certain level, the main road through Ybbs the B25 gets blocked. Traffic needs to be redirected via higher lying roads.
Stage 5: The Floodbank
Due to its location the city of Ybbs is not only endangered by the Danube and the two streams flowing through Ybbs in case of floods. Another thread is the water level of the river Ybbs south of the city which has its source in the Ötscher-Region and flows via the bigger cities of Waidhofen and Amstetten towards the Danube. In order to save Oberau, a part of Ybbs which has been severely affected by floods in the past, a floodbank has been errected and raised.
Stage 6: Diversion of the Mühlbach
As stated above one problem regarding the flood protections system in Ybbs is the Mühlbach which merges with the Griesheimer Bach in Ybbs and can carry huge water masses through the city. In order to being able to pump the oncoming water into the danube at Stage 2, the whole content of the Mühlbach can be diverted into the river Ybbs at this location.
The Finale
The header coordinates have nothing to do with the location of the cache. They point to another key element of the flood protection system you might want to see (because of the distance regulations it was not possible to place a stash there). This is the place where the Danube hits Ybbs first. As, in case of floods, the Danube carries not only huge amounts of water but other objects like branches, trees or even containers as well, it was not possible to build portable walls there. Therefore, the system was built of massive concrete. The building also marks the entrance of the newly designed place at the Danube.
