The Railroad Used to Run Here?! #3 Wooden Trestles Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

This one is a clever little 2 part cache that takes you to the remnants of 2 old wooden railroad trestles that ran to downtown Port Washington years ago. When you get to GZ, can you imagine what the wooden railroad trestle bridge used to look like?

At GZ you will be looking for a guardrail containing somewhere on it a secret message with coordinates to the final (which is not too far away). Do not go over the fence or down the steep river embankment! It is dangerous and there is no need.

My "The Railroad Used to Run HERE?!" series of geocaches comes from my fascination with discovering relics of old railroad activity, especially in areas you wouldn't normally recognize them as such.

The large arrow on the map image below points to GZ, the small arrow points to another old railroad river crossing.

History of This Railroad

The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company was an interurban railroad operating from 1890 until the 1950's, with primarily passenger traffic on streetcars (sort of like a large trolley), although it also carried some freight including its own switching operations at the Port Washington and Lakeside power plants.  The new "Coal Dock Park" immediately North of the power plant today, is where a small railroad yard used to serve the power plant.  Electric locomotives continued operating at the power plants until the early 1970s.
