Geocache Description:

Ahhaaahahaa me hearties. Do ye feel landlocked and landlubbered? Here's a chance to sail on the eighth sea as discovered by the great Black Moustache himself. This splashmob will allow anyone with a suitable vessel to join us at the given co-ordinates at 1pm, in their boat, for a quick group photograph that will cause great confusion to any people, seagulls or fish passing at the time...

A flashmob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire. A splashmob is exactly the same, only it occurs whilst floating on a body of water. In this case, we will meet half way between Peel Island and the shore, at the appointed time of 1pm, facing the mainland. A horn will blow. We will all wave our oars in the air and some splashing is permitted - please be sensible! Photographs can be taken and then we will then float away in our own directions and disperse.

Ahaahaaa. Ahahahaaa. Ye might have heard of thee locally not very famous pirate Blackmoustache. He was not very famous down in the south of the land for ye old pirating, but up here he was almost unheard of... - well... it's said - only a legend mind you - that he was the first of the local pirates* to discover the lake Coniston. Rumour and hearsay says he would look out for ye old adventurers trying to sail yonder to Peel Island and then steal their loot, including several moldy sandwiches, some half drunk Ginger Beer and once even a half sucked mint**. This not be a pirate meeting, this be for adventurers as pirating sunk out of this area many moons ago... but if ye feel the need to hoist your skull and crossbones flag, then so be's it. Adventurer's are also very much welcome.

The location is between Peel Island (home of the Swallows and Amazons cache) and the mainland. It has been chosen as it is fairly sheltered and calm between Peel Island and the mainland, it is not particularly deep, plus you are not very far from the shore on either side. We are running the splashmob around lunchtime as you may want to visit the island and have a picnic or bbq. Should you want to do this you could do it before or after the splashmob.

To recap, the splashmob takes place at 1pm. The boats will gather as close together as is plausible in the minutes before 1pm, please be ready in good time. A horn will blow, oars can be waved in the air and splashing will take place. Take care with oars and be sensible. This will last a short time and then we will disperse. The splashmob will only last a short time, so essentially you need to be there when the horn blows to log the event.

Please note the following points.

- This is a family friendly splashmob for small unpowered boats. You can bring whatever boat you want but you cannot drive a vehicle to the water edge and must be able to carry it the five or ten minutes up the path to the lake shore. Strictly no powered boats at the splashmob.

- Please respect other people at all times. Some people will be better with boats and water than others. Please ensure that everyone is able to enjoy the splashmob.

- You are in charge of your own safety if you attend. This is a group of individuals briefly meeting for a photograph, not an organised boating event. Please bring your own buoyancy aids, it is strongly recommended that everyone should have some means of staying afloat in the event of an emergency. Please make your own assessments.

- Bring a change of clothes. Leave valuable items in the car or on the shore. Dress appropriately. Although it is unlikely, please plan for the eventuality that you might get wet.

- People have swum to the island in the past and therefore this means of attending the splashmob may be possible - but you would need to be aware there will be quite a lot of inflatable boats and canoes in the water so you would be doing so at your own risk entirely.

- There are various car parks on the road close to the island but there are a limited number of spaces and roadside parking is probably not possible as it's only a single track road. Please consider car sharing if possible or allow time to park further down the road and walk up. If you plan on coming to watch without a boat, please consider walking a bit further to the splashmob to allow room for those with boats.

We have been to the lake to check it's suitability and this seemed like a safe and accessible location. However, anyone attending should assess the water for themselves, the conditions on the day and their own ability - you attend as an individual and at entirely your own risk. Hopefully there will be a good number of people on the water so help would be offered quickly for anyone having difficulties. Once again, the organisers do not pretend to be nautical experts, we have done all we can in the planning but we do not take responsibility for attendees at this splashmob.

Please note, this splashmob is not part of the official Piratemania programme and we strongly emphasise that anyone not attending Piratemania is also very welcome to attend. Boating and swimming on Coniston Water is allowed with no requirement for a permit.

*he was the only local pirate, using the term loosely obviously....

** local historians doubt the presence of the mint.... actually, they doubt the presence of the pirate but that's besides the point...

Additional attributes: may require swimming boat required

Update - a badge has now been produced which attendees can add to their profile. Please copy and paste the text below.
