Il progetto di questo imponente edificio, rimasto incompiuto, viene generalmente attribuito a Jacopo Sansovino (che potrebbe invece avere ricevuto l’incarico di proseguire un lavoro già impostato da altri). L’architetto vi lavorò dal 1534, ed i lavori proseguirono fino al 1583, quando intervenne ad inaugurarla il doge Nicolò Da Ponte.
La sala al pianterreno è divisa in tre navate da colonne binate, mentre al piano superiore si ha un vastissimo salone destinato alle riunioni dei confratelli ed affrescato dalla scuola di Paolo Veronese. Vi si conservavano notevoli dipinti andati dispersi dopo la soppressione del 1806, quando l’edificio fu destinato ad uso militare.
Nel XX secolo diventò sede di impianti sportivi ed il salone del piano superiore ospitò per molto tempo la Reyer Venezia, la squadra di pallacanestro della città. Attualmente sono in corso i lavori per trasformarlo in un auditorium.
The design of this impressive building, still unfinished, is generally attributed to Jacopo Sansovino (which could instead have been asked to continue work already set by others). The room on the ground floor is divided into three naves by twin columns, while upstairs there is a vast hall for the meetings of the members and painted by the school of Paolo Veronese. In the twentieth century it became the seat of sports facilities and the lounge on the top floor was home for a long time Reyer Venezia, the basketball team of the city. Are currently underway to turn it into an auditorium.
