Geocache Description:

Winterbourne Down Methodist or Bethesda church is located opposite All Saints Church on Down Road, Winterbourne Down.
The cache is overlooked, PLEASE be stealthy and replace so it can't be seen by passers by.
This is a short walk away from the church due to proximity of other nearby caches.

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard. Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all. Church History This Place of Worship was founded in 1876, and it is still open.

An electronic copy of Dr Charles Hugh Babington's definitive History of Winterbourne provides the information that Winterbourne Down Methodist Church, then described as the United Methodist Chapel, Winterbourne Down, dates from 1876.

Its first known appearance on Old Maps is OS 1882 1:2,500, where it is recorded as "Methodist Chapel (Free)", demonstrating the typical progression of "Free Methodist" to "United Methodist". It was also known by the name of "Bethesda Methodist", and baptism records exist from 1853, available on the above website.

Evidently therefore it was preceded by an earlier meeting place. This may have been the "Winterdown Room" recorded on the Religious Census of 1851, for which see the separate entry in this database.
