Geocache Description:

30ml camo tube


Church. Mid and late C13 and C14 with minor C19 restoration. Regular coursed and
squared coursed limestone with ashlar west tower and spire. Colleyweston slate
and lead roofs. Aisled nave, chancel, north chapel, south porch and west tower.
South elevation of chancel of 2-window range of 2-light square-head windows.
Blocked low side lancet to far left. Steep gabled slated roof with ashlar
parapets. Mid C13 two-light east window with gable above. Similar gable abutting
is probably late C14 with 3-light window with trefoil and quatrefoils. Simple
arch-head tomb recess below window. North elevation of north chapel is blank.
Late C13 south aisle of 3 bays 2-window range of 2-light square-head windows
with carved label stops and some renewed tracery. 3-light east window with
cusped intersecting tracery. 2-light west window with circle enclosing spherical
triangles. Lean-to roof. Corbel table with carved heads and ashlar parapet
above. 2 gargoyles. Gabled porch occupies bay to far left with chamfered outer
arch and roll moulded inner arch with 2 orders of shafts. North aisle of 3 bays.
2-window range of 2-light square-head windows with carved label stops. Blocked
north door to right. North chapel abutts to left. 2-light west window is similar
to south aisle west window. Steep gabled and slated roof with ashlar gable
parapets. South nave clerestory of 3-window range of 2-light windows with
4-centred arch heads. Window to right has been modified with a wood mullion.
North clerestory is blank. Shallow gable roof with ashlar gable parapets.
Perpendicular west tower of 3 stages with narrow middle stage. 4-stage angle
buttresses to western corners. West door has 4-centred arch head with decorated
spandrels. 2-light west window above. Pairs of 4-light bell-chamber openings,
with transoms, to each face of third stage. Slender broach spire with 2 tiers of
lucarnes. Interior: 4-bay nave arcade of Perpendicular roll moulded and hollow
arches with piers having a long chamfer towards the nave and aisles, with a
hollow in the centre and shafts with capitals towards the arch openings. Double
chamfered chancel arch with bracketed capitals and chamfered and moulded tower
arch. 2 bay north chapel arcade of double chamfered arches with central
quatrefoil pier and bracketed responds. Nave roof structure has some original
timbers others are C19. Piscina and double sedilia with trefoil heads, to right
of altar. Similar piscina and sedilia in north chapel, now vestry. Niche to left
of north chapel window has carved bracket under. Shafts and roll mouldings to
east windows. Richly carved Perpendicular font. Jacobean communion rail with
turned balusters. Late C15 wall pointing to east wall of south aisle depicting a
stag and unicorn; other fragments, some now covered. Stained glass; fragments of
medieval glass to windows of north and south walls of aisles and south aisle
west window. C18 box pews without doors to nave and running longitudinally, on
tiered staging in aisles. C18 three-decker pulpit and similar wall panelling to
north aisle.
