Zem je to, po čom kráčame a čo je stále pevné, stabilné, nehnuteľné a relatívne nemenné. Môžeme sa o ňu oprieť ako o pevnú skalu. Pokiaľ ju chceme pretvárať, vyžaduje to mnoho práce a trpezlivosti, odoláva všetkým zmenám. Čím pevnejšiu formu jej však dáme, čím viac do nej investujeme, tým dlhšie v tomto tvare vydrží. Čím poctivejšia práca, tým šťavnatejšie nám zem vydá ovocie. Ale nie je to hneď a zadarmo, je treba trpezlivosti. Je najstálejší a najpevnejší zo všetkých elementov a má najurčitejšiu formu a tvar. Tvar skaly je ostro ohraničený, na rozdiel od ohňa, vody a vzduchu, ktoré voľne prúdia a neustále sa menia.

Napriek tomu aj zem sa nám niekedy zachveje pod nohami, keď nastane zemetrasenie. Zem zostáva dlho dlho stabilná, dlho sa nič nedeje, ale akonáhle sa raz v zemetrasení pohne, je obtiažne vrátiť veci do pôvodného stavu, všetko sa zrúti, nezostáva kameň na kameni..

Krásnym príkladom zemského živlu je Fangorn - Stromobrad a Enti z Pána Prsteňov. Ich myslenie a plány sú v porovnaní s hobitmi veľmi pomalé a opatrné, riadia sa jedinou zásadou: "nejednať zbŕklo". Ale akonáhle sa raz rozohnia, nič ich nezastaví.

Na druhú stranu je zem tým, o čo sa všetky ostatné živly opierajú a bez čoho by zrejme vôbec nemohli existovať. Je to pra-matéria, pramať, prapôvodný obsah, jediný živel, ktorý je schopný dávať ostatným tvar. Aby mohla voda tiecť, potrebuje koryto, ktoré určí tvar jeho toku. Aby sme mohli nabrať vodu z potoka, potrebujeme hlinenú nádobu. Aby sme ju vypálili, potrebujeme oheň. A aby mohol oheň horieť, potrebuje drevo, ktoré vyrastá zo zeme.

Vzduch, zdá sa, sa so zemou nikdy nezhodne: ona mu stavia do cesty prekážky v podobe skál, stien a domov a on ju postupne, pomaličky rozrušuje, keď jej prachové čiastočky ulamuje a odnáša do diaľky. Zem je pre vzduch vezením, z ktorého sa explóziou snaží predrať von (alebo implóziou dostať dovnútra). Vzduch je pre zem niečo, čo ju večne rozrušuje. Vedú spolu ustavičný svár, tak ako voda a oheň. Nič nie je večné, ani zem, ani voda, ani oheň, ani vzduch. Je len večná hra ich premien.

Earth is what we walk on, what is always solid, stable, immovable and relatively unchanging. We can lean against it like leaning against the solidrock. If we want to reshape it, it took many hours of work and patience, it resist all changes. The firmer form we give it, the more we invest into it, the longer it lasts in its shape. The more virtuous work on it, the juicier fruit is reaped. However it is not immediate nor free, a lot of patience is needed. It is far the most steady and solid of all elements and it has the most definite form and shape. The shape of a rock is clearly limited as oposed to fire, water or air. Those flow and change all the time.

Despite all of this even the Earth trembles under our feet when there is earthquake. The Earth is long long stable, nothing is happening, but immediately as it starts to move in the earthquake it is rather difficult to return everything to its original state. Everything collapses, no rock stays on another.

Beautiful example for earth element is Fangor and the Ents from the Lord of the rings. Their thinking and plans are in comparison to hobits very slow and cautious, they follow simple rule: "Not to act in haste". Once they become enraged, nothing can stop them.

On the other hand is the earth element what other elements rely on and without it they probably couldn't exists. It is forematter, foremother, foreoriginal vessel, the only element that gives the others shape. For the water to flow it needs the river bed to determinate direction of its current. To take the water from the stream we need a clay pot. To bake the pot we need fire. For fire to burn we need wood which grows from earth.

It seems that air is never on good terms with earth; earth raises obstacles in form of rocks, walls, houses and the air slowly disrupts them when the dust particles are torn and carried far away. Earth is for air the a prison wherefrom it wants to get out by an explosion(or get in by implosion). Air is for earth something to disrupts it all the time. They are in everlasting fight as well as water and fire. Nothing is permanent, not earth, not water, not fire, not air. It is just an eternal game of their transformations.
