Geocache Description:

Gernonstown Church is situated in the valley of Gernonstown which was originally called Garlandstown after a Norman family who had sone land in the area and also in Co Louth.

The ruined church comprises a nave and chancel with a barrel-vaulted chamber. The vestry is still fairly intact and the remains of a large tracery window can also be seen.
The Church is mediaeval in style and could have possibly fallen into disrepair at the dissolution of the Catholic Church in 1539 under King Henry VIII.
There is much evidence in the immediate area around the church of an even earlier settlement which comprises of two ring-forts on the higher ground above the church.
There is also a tumulus (an ancient burial mound) in the adjoining field.
