São Luiz is one of the most important theaters in Lisbon. Opened in 1894, it's had the names of Queen Amélia Theater, Theater of the Republic, and São Luiz Cine. It was given its current name when it was acquired by City Hall in 1971. It was remodeled and enlarged in 1998, now presenting a varied programming usually featuring young artists.
O Teatro São Luiz é uma das salas de espetáculos mais importantes de Lisboa. Inaugurado em 1894, já teve os nomes de Teatro Dona Amélia, Teatro República, e São Luiz Cine. Passou a Teatro Municipal de São Luiz quando foi comprado pela Câmara Municipal em 1971. Foi remodelado e ampliado em 1998, apresentando agora uma programação variada que aposta em jovens artistas.
Lisbon once had Europe's largest opera house, only to be completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 shortly after its inauguration. A new one was built soon after that, with excellent acoustics and fine rococo decorations. You'll see that it was inspired by Milan's La Scala outside, and by Naples' San Carlo Theatre inside where classic operas are presented throughout the year. There is also a good café with tables on the terrace, and outdoor concerts on some summer nights.
Lisboa tinha a maior ópera da Europa quando essa foi destruída pelo terramoto de 1755, pouco depois da sua inauguração. Uma nova ópera foi construída algum tempo depois, com uma excelente acústica e um belo interior rococó. Esse foi claramente inspirado no teatro San Carlo de Nápoles, enquanto o exterior lembra o La Scala de Milão. Óperas clássicas são apresentadas aqui durante o ano, e dispõe também de um bom café com esplanada. No largo em frente apresentam-se concertos ao ar livre durante o verão.
