Brixton railway station is a commuter station in South London served by the Chatham Main Line (operated by Southeastern) from London Victoria to Orpington and beyond. The typical service is one train every 15 minutes in both directions. The railway station is situated just about 100m north of Brixton tube station (the southernmost station on Victoria line), and not all that far from the London Overground station either. The immediate area surrounding the station(s) is dominated by the various railway bridges, arches and underpasses crisscrossing between Brixton Road, Atlantic Road and Station Road. A SideTracked cache was long overdue around here, not to mention a corrective move on the general dearth of urban geocaches in Brixton and surroundings. Unless you’re on your commute and pressed for time, do stroll around the markets in Station Road, Electric Avenue, and Brixton Village!
Inside the station, three bronze sculptures stand on the platforms. This work, "Platforms Piece" by Kevin Atherton, was erected in 1986 and the statues are life casts of three people - two black, one white - who regularly travelled from Brixton. The sculptures are the result of a joint venture between British Rail and Lambeth Council, and it’s been suggested that they were the first sculptures made of black British people. Two of the sculptures face each other across the platforms in public use, while a third stands rather forlornly on the abandoned Catford platform.
Needless to say, between commuters to/from three stations and numerous bus stops, shops, and many different markets taking place around the cache location on most days of the week, muggles abound! The difficulty rating for this otherwise fairly straightforward cache-and-dash situation thus includes a maximum stealth mode requirement!
