Geocache Description:

This cache site is on fairly smooth ground and should accommodate a stroller almost to the cache. It is located on the old road to Hondo, also known as Soda Flats.

Up until the building of the new road, Sunday morning people would have been heading this way to attend church. Rev. JR Price was the first Anglican minister officially stationed in Smith. Prior to this a variety of ministers came to the area servicing Smith, Hondo & Moose Portage. Before an actual church as built services were held in schools, private homes and at one time the Railway Station. Being the only Protestant Church in the area, people of all denominations came together to meet, making quite large congregations. At some point a person from England had passed through and gained a soft spot for Smith. Around 1936, this benefactor donated a sum of money to be used in building a church. The local men got together and erected the first church of logs and gave it the name of “Good Shepherd. The current building, which was moved from its original site, holds memories for many people. Baptisms, marriages and funeral services were held here, in addition to regular services where friendships were formed. If you want to view this historical building it is opened upon request.
