Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the Peace River Trail.  It can only be accessed by foot, horse or ATV.  Please ensure you have adequate food and water with you.

Some of the men heading to the Klondike Gold Rush came along this trail. Some of them decided to stay in the area and others returned. Our neighboring Hamlet, Chisholm was named after Thomas Chisholm who had been the owner of the Aurora Saloon and Dance Hall in Dawson City during the gold rush. He stood well over six feet tall and weighed in at over 240 pounds. It was said that he wore a watch chain of gold nuggets around his neck and according to J. W. Judge, a railway pioneer, it was as big as a logging chain. He came to the area in about 1912 to start his tie camp on the west side of the river. The ‘tie hackers’’ camp supplied ties for the coming railroad. The 8’ ties would be loaded on wagons with teams of four to six horses and driven to the railroad in the river months when the river was frozen over. The business would later be expanded into the Chisholm Lumber Company, floating logs down the Athabasca. Tom Chisholm left the area in the 1920’s and died penniless in 1936.
