Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the Peace River Trail.  It can be accessed by foot, ATV or horse.  Please ensure that you take adequate food and water. If you have a dog it would be great to take him or her too. They sometimes come in handy.

From time immortal, it seems, dogs have graced us with their presence as our loyal companions. They are our watchers alerting us to danger. Farm dogs help herd and keep the other animals safe. The dogs that run the Iditarod are the closest we come to the dog teams that were used in the area as late as the 1950’s. The dogs were loved even though they were working animals. There has been more than one story of a trapper feeling sorry for his dogs and building multiple dog houses. It generally ended the same. He would come out in a blizzard to find them all sleeping on the roofs of the houses. There is no doubt in my mind that the dogs were smart. Trappers with teams generally did not need to worry if they could not place where they had left a set over the summer months. When they set out on their trap lines the following winter the dogs would stop at the exact spot for the trapper to check his sets. Wise men knew to save their dogs as much as possible. A couple of the Willis boys did a 6 hour journey to their cabin taking turns running in front of the dogs to break trail for them. There have also been times where the dogs saved their owner’s (partner’s) lives. Moise Villenueve took sick in his trapping cabin. After several days he knew his only hope was to get home. He somehow managed to get the harnesses on his dogs and fell into a stupor in the sled. In his brief moments of consciousness he didn't know where he was or particularly care. At 5:30 in the morning his son was woken by the sounds of barking and yelping in the yard. He peaked out the window to see Moise’s two big Labradors pulling his toboggan on the back. The dogs would not be quiet until after digging through the blankets in the sled Lawrence had found Moise. He was in bad shape but survived thanks to his dogs. No doubt about it - man’s best friend.
