Spurfield is a name that a lot of people recognize around here. It is the name of one of the railway points that became a logging camp.
There were a number of local residents who either grew up there or have relatives that did.
The mill was located just up the Salteaux River on the Lesser Slave River side. It was a good size operation, that included housing and a school. The company office was used as the store and mail delivery.
One resident remembers catching a ride with someone who was delivering the mail one time. They went up in a canoe with a small motor on it and it took about 2 hours.
It was open for about ten years in the 1950’s and 60’s but remained a favorite place to go see before the fires.
Memories of Spurfield are getting dim so if you have additional information we would love to hear about it.
