Geocache Description:

A very scenic view.   You can pull off the road here to a sandy clearing.  It may be muddy in the spring or after a heavy rain.  If you wanted to picnic along the Old Smith Highway this would be the ideal spot.  In most spots the terrain is suitable for strollers.  The water can be swift here at times.

Salteaux or Soto Landing was located at the mouth of the Salteaux River where it enters the Lesser Slave River.  This was the end of the portage around the Lesser Slave River rapids.  From here people and freight were reloaded on boats to go to Lesser Slave Lake and other points north.  Joe Norris was the owner of the trading post located here.  He did a lively business with tired people setting out on the next leg of their journey.

We are not sure how the Salteaux River was named but it could have been after one of the Salteaux Tribe who at one point spent some time scouted for one of the fur trading companies.  This scenic spot is now one of the places where boats are launched into the Lesser Slave River.
