Geocache Description:

It will take a bit of deer trail walking to get to this cache. There is not a good direct route. The best way to visualize where you need to go is to find SG021 and look across the tracks and the creek. That is your destination. If you like old home sites it is worth the trek.

If you like old home sites this is worth the trek. The home that was here burnt down in 1964 and the site was abandoned. As in this case, if a local family suffers a tragedy they are supported in any number of ways from other community members. In the same sense of community spirit we also come together to have fun. From the early days, Smith has been a connected community, sharing in many family and recreational activities. In 1969 the Smith Recreation Board began with the mission to provide programming to area families. By 1973, funded by Turkey Shoots and operating pop machines at the local Federated Coop Mill, the curling rink and skating rink were built, as well as providing a swimming program and various arts and crafts to area residents. Through the establishment of the Smith-Hondo Agricultural Recreation Society (SHARA) in 1979 further programming was established and by 1983 the Smith Community Complex was built. The Fall Fair & Rodeo is the largest annual event in Smith, being held on the Labor Day weekend. Events have changed little over the years, with a parade, rodeo, dinner and dance, petting zoo and more. While the Smith Community Complex is currently closed due to structural issues (a new complex is to be built in 2014/2015), the Fair is still being held and numerous and committed community volunteers want to ensure the Fair stays true to the pioneering spirit of the early settlers and provide fun and activities for all ages.
