Geocache Description:

This cache should be a breeze.  It is a nice place for a stroll but there are residences close by that may have animals so if you walk your dog please ensure it is on a leash.  The ground is fairly level and should be all right for a stroller. There is easy parking beside the Junior Forest Warden Club House.

In 1961 Jack Verny started the Smith Junior Forest Wardens with 31 boys.  They had the usual courses but included hikes, marching drills, basketball, & boxing tournaments as other activities.

In 1964 the Parent Council formed a committee to spear head the  building of the log club house which was completed in the fall of 1965.

In 1968 the Girl Forest Guards were started with 27 girls.  The Club House was not large enough for all members, so meetings were held on alternate weeks.

The Smith Club was the top club in Canada in 1976 and received the Max Billingsly Award.  They hosted the  Western Alberta Area Council Jamboree in 1977, with the help of Slave Lake Forestry.

In the late 1990’s there were no longer enough interested kids to maintain the J.F.W. and it was disbanded.  In 2013 there has been a renewed interest and the process of re opening the Junior Forest Wardens has begun with 20 to 30 youth interested in participating.   It will be nice to see the club house being used again and the kids learning about outdoor survival and activities.
