Geocache Description:

This is located along part of the old road in Smith. It is an easy walk for pets and children. The trail length depends on your entry point. The closest building is the Smith Legion.

The first meeting to form a Legion in this area was held in February 1947 at Alex Young’s house in Hondo. In 1950, with Roy Richards organizing, veterans and volunteers erected the building using lumber from the local sawmills, including those or Reinhart Stelter and Bill and Rod Rempel.

The Smith Legion #248 hall has been a place to hold socials, wedding receptions, funerals, and other community events since 1950. At one point it was also used as a movie theater.

It is still in use today and Legion members organize various activities for the community and guests to participate in.

Each Remembrance Day the Members honor those who have gone on before.

George Bisson was our communities first casualty. He was a stoker on HMS Fraser when it was rammed and sunk by a larger warship during evacuation operations on a French port. Other veterans include Armand Beauchamp, Archie Brown, Floyd Brown, Jack Coburn, Charlie Crick, Hawley Croswell, Clarence Earl Sr., Gene Earl, Joy Earl, Wes Earl, Sidney Eggleston, John Gladue, Claude Graling, Oscar Guenette, Laurier Guenette, Ed Harris, Bill Harrison, Orval Hayes Sr., Jack Hugo, Mary Hugo, John Jamieson, M.
