Geocache Description:

A traditional cache placed in the Mojave Desert southwest of Afton Canyon in a northern section of the Cady Mountains.

Gophertrax and I like to hike in our great Mojave Desert and made an enjoyable hike out into this area of the Cady Mountains today. We parked near the railroad tracks close to Afton Canyon Campground and hiked generally south up a wash into the foothills of the northern Cady Mountains. This cache is near the end of that wash. We placed the cache in an area where we had a good GPS signal. The wash continues past the cache location for about 500 more feet. That is the most interesting section of the wash as it narrows to a slot type canyon and then there is a series of dry falls and ponds after the slot section. The dry falls are not overly difficult to negotiate and it's definetly worth a look in our opinion. There's numerous veins of different types of rock in this area. In fact the entire hike we made today was through a rock hound's paradise. Usually when hiking our "load" of caches, food and drinks lightens as we progress. Today the load never lightened as we were constantly picking up cool rocks along the way to place in our cactus garden at home. If you like cool rocks you may want to bring a burro along with you on this hike. This area is mentioned in a book entitled "Gem Trails of Southern California" by James B. Mitchell. According to the book one can find flame, banded, lace, and moss agate; sagenite; brown, yellow, red, orange and bloodstone jasper; jasp-agate; opalite in shades of green and yellow and bubbly chalcedony in white, pink and purple hues. I'm sure we saw some of those, but in our case they're just pretty rocks, whose names we unfortunately don't know. As in all desert caches come prepared with plenty of water and watch out for those desert critters. We saw scorpions, horned lizards, many beetles, hawks, crows, sphinx moths newly emerged from their cocoons and lots of lizards. We saw no snakes, but I'm sure there are some out here. We also saw three lower jaws and some spinal sections of big horn sheep on this hike; which leads me to believe there is probably a cougar living somewhere in the area. Stay alert and make some noise as you go and it should be OK. This would be a tough hike in the high heat of the summer months. Also as much of the hike is in washes, it wouldn't be advisable during thunder storms. Some of the sides of the washes are steep and would be tough to climb. Be sure to bring a camera as the scenery is grand. Bring something to carry your rocks in too. Enjoy!
