Camp d'entrainement militaire depuis 1879, le champ de tir du Bêle devient pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le principal lieu d'éxécution des résistants à Nantes.
Le 30 août 1941, on y fusille Marin Poirier, premier résistant nantais à tomber sous les balles de l'occupant.
En octobre 1941, 16 des 50 otages y trouvent la mort.
Suite au "procès des 42" , les 37 condamnés à mort y sont éxécutés les 29 janvier, 13 février et 7 mai 1943.
Cette même année, le "procès des 16" s'achève par 15 condanations à mort : 11 résistants sont fusillés au Bêle, le 25 août 1943.
En tout ce sont plus de 80 personnes qui seront fusillés au champ de tir du Bêle pendant la guerre.
