"Novye Cheryomushki" ("New Cheryomushki") metro station was opened in 1962. For long 12 years it was the terminal station of the orange line. Trains passed the station and followed to the "Kaluzhskaya" depot, and the station "Kaluzhskaya" was constructed and opened only in 1974. Even nowadays in peak afternoon hours some trains from the centre of the capital don't go further than "Novye Cheryomushki", and disappointed Muscovites from southers districts leave trains and flood the station to wait for the next train.
Historically Cheryomushki was a district NE from the current location of the metro station. In 50ies (last century) it was actually a village, and the place where trains go nowadays were an open pit where clay was excavated (for bricks). After that time they started to develop the living infrastructure and numerous streets appeared with impersonal names like "1st Cheryomushkinskaya St.", "2nd Cheryomushkinskaya St.", etc. In 60ies the government started its program of building standard 5-store panel houses (known as "khruschevki" among Muscovites after Nikita Khruschev, the Soviet leader of that period). Despite all efforts to demolish these constructions in recent times, there are still many of them in the area, some easily seen from the entrance to the metro station. In fact, nothing was left after massive newest reconstructions except these dinosaurs and the building of "Okhotnik" shop. It's not widely known that the crossroads nearby the metro was named after Leonid Brezhnev after his death in 1982, and that it was proudly called a square for several years until (already in "perestroika" times) one night a group of workers silently appeared at the "square" to remove the monument to the Communist leader and take it away. Thus, the square returned its usual status as a common crossroads.
"Novye Cheryomushki" is a shallow station (only 12 m).

Станция "Новые Черемушки" была открыта в 1962 году. Долгие 12 лет это была конечная станция оранжевой ветки метро. Поезда отсюда уходили в депо "Калужская", а одноименную станцию "Калужская" открыли только в 1974 году. До сих пор некоторые поезда из центра идут только до "Новых Черемушек", и в вечерние "часы пик" недовольные жители южных окраин столицы, ворча, покидают вагоны и заполняют перрон станции.
Исторический район Черемушки находился к северо-востоку от нынешней станции метро. В 50-х годах прошлого века это была, в сущности, деревня, а на месте современных транспортных развязок был располагался карьер, где добывали глину для кирпича. Потом началось строительство, появилась сетка улочек с безликими названиями "Черемушкинская 1-я", "Черемушкинская 2-я", и так далее. Наконец, в 60-х годах район стал массово застраиваться типовыми панельными пятиэтажками. Несмотря на усилия по сносу этих домов и строительство более современных зданий уже в наше время, так называемых "хрущевок" остается еще очень много. Некоторые видны прямо от выхода из метро; в сущности, кроме них из прежнего антуража здесь остался лишь магазин "Охотник". Мало кто знает, но сразу после смерти генсека ЦК КПСС Леонида Брежнева перекресток возле станции метро "Новые Черемушки" был гордо превращен в "Площадь имени Брежнева" и оставался таковым несколько лет, пока однажды ночью (уже в годы перестройки) рабочие тихонечко не увезли бюст вождя, и площадь снова стала обычным перекрестком.
"Новые Черемушки" - мелкая станция (глубина всего 7 м).
