The Obelisk in Hyde Park is located at the intersection of Elizabeth and Bathurst Streets. Unveiled in 1857 by the then Lord Mayor George Thornton, it serves as a sewerage vent designed to eliminate noxious gases from the sewer by moving them above street level.
Modelled after Cleopatra's Needle located on the banks of London's River Thames, the overall structure stands 22 metres high and comprises a square sandstone base 6.5 metres high. The vent at the top is a filigreed bronze pyramid.
Historically the structure had been humourously referred to as Thornton's Scent Bottle although today the Obelisk is better known as the oldest monument within Hyde Park than as part of the sewerage system.
UPDATE (2015-03-30): Due to issues with the physical waypoint repeatedly going missing, the first stage of this multi is now virtual, completing a simple field puzzle will provide the final coordinates to the cache.
On the EASTERN side of the Obelisk is a small inscription noting who was responsible for construction and when it was completed. Convert the following letters into their numerical equivalents (e.g. A=1, B=2, C=3):
- The SEVENTH letter of the FIRST word. Let this number be "A".
- The FOURTH letter of the FOURTH word. Let this number be "B".
- The THIRD letter in the THIRD word. Let this number be "C".
- The SIXTH letter in the FIFTH word. Let this number be "D".
- The EIGHTH letter in the FOURTH word. Let this number be "E".
The cache is located at S 33° 52.ABA E 151° 12.CDE. Verify your coordinates.
The cache is a small camouflaged container containing log book and pencil only. Extreme stealth is required when searching for this cache as the location is often swarming with muggles. Please re-hide all items as found and replace any camo to prevent the cache from being damaged or stolen.
