Kaiser Friedrich IV, der ein Faible für die Mathematik hatte,
machte seinem Hofmathematiker einst ein besonderes Geschenk:
"Er ist ein Mann großer Begabung und hat mich oft mit seiner
Weisheit erfreut. Als Dank will ich ihm ein Stück Land schenken.
Dies Land soll exakt die Form eines gleichseitigen Dreiecks haben.
Drei Grenzsteine habe ich bereits setzen lassen, durch die jeweils
eine Grenze des Grundstückes verlaufen soll. Die Eckpunkte des
Grundstückes festzulegen, soll allerdings seiner eigenen Weisheit
überlassen sein."
Der Mathematiker, einer der besten seiner Zeit, machte seinem
Ruf alle Ehre, und wählte die drei Eckpunkte derart, dass die
Fläche des Grundstückes tatsächlich die maximal erreichbare
war.
Kurz vor seinem Tod vergrub der Mathematiker seine gesamten
Reichtümer an der östlichen Spitze seines Grundstücks. Leider ist
das Wissen, wie die genaue Lage des Grundstückes war, im Laufe der
Jahrhunderte verloren gegangen. Sehr wohl überliefert sind aber die
Stellen, wo der Kaiser einst die Grenzsteine setzen ließ:

Emperor Frederick IV, who was fond of mathematics, once gave a
special gift to his court mathematician:
"Thou art a person of strong merits and hast often pleased me
with your wisdom. Thus I donate a piece of land to thou. It shall
have the shape of an equilateral triangle. Already have I had set
three stones, through each of which one of the boundaries of thy
estate shall pass. Upon the corners of thy land shallst thou decide
as thou wish."
The mathematician, one of the best in these times, chose the
three corners such that he achieved the maximum area for his piece
of land.
Shortly before he died, the mathematician buried all his riches
at the east corner of his land. Unfortunately the knowledge about
the exact locations of the estate, its boundary-lines and corners
has been lost centuries ago. But the places, where the emperor set
the boundary-stones, still are well-known:
