Geocache Description:



The town of Matewan, WV, is rich in history from the Hatfields and Mccoys to the Matewan Massacre.


Matewan was center to the once booming coalfields of southern West Virginia. A visit to this town is a visit into the past.

Plagued by flooding throughout the years, the town of Matewan is enclosed by a flood wall for protection. This wall is often a focal point for tourists in that the history of the town is portrayed in a unique way. This area also plays host for various activities such as car shows, town fairs, festivals, weddings, picnics, and family gatherings.

In an attempt to give back to the communities we visit as geocachers, we ask geocachers in town for the HMGT 2014 to join us for a CITO in this historical town. We will gather at approximately 8:00 am and dismiss at 8:30 am.

This should be ample time to make a difference in this community as well as allow time to make the trip to Williamson for the event registration.

Bags and gloves will be provided, however, bringing your own personal work gloves is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
