About Village Sign Caches
This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).
The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!
More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website
Toddington is a large village in Bedfordshire, situated 5 miles NNW of Luton. It is half a mile from Junction 12 of the M1 motorway and lends its name to the nearby motorway service station. It is built around a large village green, on which sits the village sign. Toddington reputedly had the most pubs per head of population of any village in the UK, although numbers have declined in recent years. Toddington also has its own theatre on Conger Lane. Another well known entertainment feature of Toddington is the brass band. The Toddington Town Band has existed in one form or another since 1856.
The sign has been replaced - I'm not sure if it has the original plaque. There are two methods to calculate the final coordinates for the cache.
Method 1: On the post, is a brass plaque. The sign was provided by..... in ABCD with the seating funded by ........ EFGH
Simply take the numbers and calculate the final coordinates.
N51° 56. (A+D+3) (E+H+4)(B+6)W W000° 31.(8-G)(11-F-H)(A+C+3)
Method 2: On the village green is a bench with a green plaque. There are 'U' lines of text, the 'V'th word is "IN", the 'W'th word is BOYS, the forename and surname combined have 'X' letters, the second number on the plaque is 'Y' and the name is on the 'Z'th line of text.
Simply take the numbers and calculate the final coordinates.
N51° 56. UVW W000° 31.XYZ
The cache is a small tube in green tape. The final approach to the cache must be made from the south through a grassy area. It is not accessible from the road immediately to the north - despite what it may appear on your map. Please take care - especially of children - if you are near water. Happy caching!
For Dave's Piglings and Smokeypugs who made me do it!

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do.
I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk
so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
Congratulations to The Bongtwashes on being First To Find.
