Did you know that this cache falls within the boundaries of Tring Town Council ? Tring itself lies on the Tring Salient where Hertfordshire pushes a long finger into Buckinghamshire . Villages in the Chilterns appear to have been connected with the lower land in the Aylesbury Vale and Thames Valley . In this case the town of Tring has 'owned' a fairly narrow strip of land which basically stretches from the Natural History Museum on Akeman Street out past this spot to the country boundary with Buckinghamshire at the far end of the Bridleway.
The nearby villages of Hawridge, Cholesbury and St Leonards had historical ties with other lowland areas, Hawridge with Marsworth which is over 6 miles away, Cholesbury with Drayton Beauchamp , St Leonards with Aston Clinton and Buckland Common with Buckland.
According to 'Hilltop Villages of the Chilterns' by David and Joan Hay,' the peculiar shape of these parishes is no accident . It reflects the economy of the 10th and 11th centuries, it need for extensive land for grazing as well as arable and the competition for the flat lands which prevented any village from acquiring an unreasonable share'
What is strange however is that now that need has long gone , the boundaries remain the same.
Please leave the stamp in the cache for the next finder.
Congratulations to IBsearching for FTF.
