Geocache Description:

Pottie

Follow the road from Fionnphort  past Fidden Farm, where the road turns a corner past a house on the left walk through a gate and follow the track past ruined houses towards rocky granite hills surrounded by woodland.

At the start of this track is the remains of a black house dating from the first half of the 19th Century and is built form granite stone. The house was divided into two by a wooden partition.  Immediately to the east of the cottage is evidence of lazy beds, with a low turf wall enclosing it. The hills nearby were often used as hiding places for fugitives. One such fugitive was Duncan MacKechnie, a local man accused of stealing and slaughtering sheep who is thought to have hidden out in the caves in the wooded hill area.

This route forms part of a circular walk, for more details see the booklet ‘Discover the Ross...Fidden and Poit na h-I – A Guide to Walks in the District of Fidden’ available locally from the Ross of Mull Historical Centre in Bunessan, or the Ferry Shop in Fionnphort.
