Geocache Description:

A lovely woodland walk to this cache along the River Lussa

The Peddler’s Pool and Cairn.

The Peddler's Pool and cairn can be found about three quarters of mile along the old glen road from Strathcoil parallel to the River Lussa. Parking is probably best back from the junction on the turn off to Lochbuie and Croggan.

The cairn is topped by an Iron Celtic Cross. The peddler in question was John Jones, whom died on the 1st of April, 1891. His demise is a sad tale. In his role as pedlar he had called at two houses on the Ross of Mull. The inhabitants of these houses had contracted small pox and had been shunned by their neighbours. John, the travelling pedlar nursed them through their illness.

He resumed his rounds with his pack on his back and than found that he too had contracted small pox with an attack that was virulent that he died by the roadside. He was buried along with his pack on the spot where the body was found and cairn and cross built to mark the location.

On the opposite side of the River is a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI). It has government protection due to its natural woodland of oak, birch, ash, hazel amd alder. It also has a very special understorey of lichens, moses, flowering plants and ferns.
