The Towers were built in the Gothic style for Lord Ilchester in 1755.
The lord wanted a grand entrance leading from boundary of his park to the mansion house. The serpentine drive was designed by Henry Flitcroft who was also the architect and designer of the lakeside temples at Stourhead.
