Our Lady and St Guthlacs RC Church Deeping St James.
The Catholic congregation in Deeping was then served by the Sacred Heart Fathers until 1984 when the district was reorganised under the Diocese of Nottingham and a new parish of Bourne and Deeping was formed. In April 1994 an historic event occurred in the Deepings when the Bishop of Nottingham ordained Jim Burke, a local young man, as a priest of the diocese; the first ordination in the Deepings for over 500 years.
With the move to the new church, the Waterton Chapel was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In 1988 the re-interment of the remains of the Waterton family took place in the presence of two of Edmund’s direct descendants and the chapel and land were sold.
The stone font, the 14th century wooden crucifix and 16th century wooden statue of Our Lady, originally installed by Edmund Waterton, were moved from the old chapel to the new church.
