Geocache Description:

Please write an interesting log, not just TFTC or a cut and paste - I enjoy reading about your visit and it's very boring to get dull logs. Be inventive! - dartymoor

Note! Cache is NOT at the given coordinates!

You will need to gather information at both waypoints to solve the puzzle and find the final location.

This cache takes you to two fair sized adits (horizontal shafts) driven into Haytor Down. I welcome more information as I've been unable to identify the mine or its minerals, but it's been suggested they are trial adits as fairly short, and possibly searching for iron ore..

Both adits are extremely wet but not flooded to any great depth and used as a water intake for the large house of Yarner downhill. The entrance doors weren't locked at the time of placing, but there is no need to enter any adit to complete this cache.

Adits were used to drive into a hillside to reach mineral-laden lodes, and also to assist with gravity water drainage from a deeper mine. There is a significant amount of waste rock trailing downhill from both shafts indicating they go in for some distance, but I haven't ventured in.

  1. At Stage 1, count the vertical bars of the gate, including the sides but not the posts. This is A.
  2. At Stage 2, count the horizontal (not diagonal!) bars of the gate. This is B.

The cache is located at N50 35.5(A+1)0 W3 44.B0(A-1)

(Please note: The above was B+1, but it appears B has had another horizontal added!)
  • Risk: You do not need to enter the adits at any time. If you choose to do so it is at your own risk, nobody else's!
  • Going: Mostly on defined paths, but some direct moorland walking required, which may be steep and wet in places.
  • Length: From the suggested parking the walk is a little over a mile.
  • Permission: Permission kindly granted by Dartmoor National Park using their Geocaching Guidelines
