Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the larger Santa Fe Trail GeoTour: santafetrail.org/geocaching

This cache is located just south of Hwy 56, west of Baldwin City, KS.  There is parking available on a farm access road that pulls into a pasture.  This provides parking for the DAR & interpretive marker placed there by the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society.  It is a very short walk from parking to the cache.

Be sure to visit www.santafetrail.org/geocaching to learn about the PASSPORT ACTIVITY to accompany this Geo Tour. This container on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail Geo Tour is located in an informational brochure box, with an identifying Santa Fe Trail Association yellow sticker on the front of the box, along with the Santa Fe National Historic Trail logo and the dark green geocaching.com ID with the information that provides coordinates, who set the cache and who to contact for information.  Each cache contains a logbook to sign, a variety of items that provide information about the Santa Fe Trail as well as swag items.  If you are participating in the Passport activity, the code word is located on the inside of the box, on the top of the lid and is clearly identified as Code Word.  Permission to set caches has been obtained.  We ask that all cachers please respect all property at the sites where our caches are set.  Do NOT go back and try to gain access to the ruins of the Simmons Point Stage Station.  It can be viewed from the highway, or the driveway, but it clearly states NO TRESPASSING and the ruins of this site are considered extremely dangerous.

The point where this cache is set is located on the Santa Fe Trail. Interpretive markers have been placed in this historic area, that provides a view of the prairie, by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1906 and by the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society. This interpretive marker refers to the Simmons Point Stage Station that was located north of US Highway 56 and 12 miles west of Baldwin City. The stage station itself remains today as part of a privately owned farmhouse that has been abandoned and has fallen into disrepair. The stones of the fallen down structure are still visible from the highway.  The station was operated by Phillip and Elmira Dodder Simmons, but its dates of operation of operation are unknown.
