Geocache Description:

A picturesque old church.

In the bus shelter in front of the church a tramp used to redside. He would camp out in the shelter and then move on after a couple of weeks, probably much to the relief of the locals. Next year he would be back again for another vacation, leaving the shelter less than fragrant.

The church was founded in 1140 and was dedicated to Saint Mary, though it is now named St James' Altham.. The earliest fabric of the church dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The three-stage tower was built in 1859 and in 1881 a chapel was rebuilt.
Inside the church there are box pews and an octagonal font given by the abbot of Whalley Abbey.
There is a two-manual organ from 1859, by John Laycock, and it has been awarded a Historic Organ Certificate.
Outside there is an attractive lych gate and the graveyard contains the graves of three World War One soldiers and a Canadian seaman from World War Two.

The River Calder flows behind the church and evidence of a ford in the old salt road can be seen.

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.

There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
