ST PETER, NORTON DISNEY
Close to the River Witham in Lincolnshire and just over the Nottinghamshire border is the village of Norton Disney.
The 13th Century church is closely connected to the D’Isigny (Disney) family and the village of Nortune became Norton Disney over the years to show the connection between the village and this important family. There are effigies within the church of various members of the family.
Evidence of a Roman settlement (villa) has been found just outside the village, this is likely to be connected to the Roman town of Brough or 'Crocoalana', on the Fosse Way, just over into Nottinghamshire.
The church once belonged to Sempringham Priory. The tower is Early English in style and circa 15th century with a fine array of gargoyles, grotesques and imps.
There are memorials to two Polish airmen who were based at RAF Swinderby (later RAF Norton Disney) during World War II, inside the church.
Walt Disney is a descendant of The D’Isigny family, and this village tends to be mentioned when tracing the famous mans ancestry.
