Sheaf Square has been redeveloped in recent years to give a good first impression of Sheffield to those arriving by train. The square incorporates a sculpture, 'The Cutting Edge', made from Sheffield steel, as well as an impressive fountain and water cascade.
Please note that the cache is not at the listed coordinates. I have placed a small cache within walking distance of Sheffield Station. The cache is not physically located in Sheffield Station itself, but you will be able to see the station from the cache site.
I have listed details of four waypoints in and around the square. At each waypoint you will find questions to answer, which will lead you to the cache!
At Question 1 (N53 22.691 W001 27.814):
- Three metres below your feet, the pond tilt forge used to operate. Between which years did the forge operate? 1ABC - 1DEF
At Question 2 (N53 22.696 W001 27.791):
- Three 'amounts' are clearly shown. What is the largest amount (add the two digits together)? G
- How many individually numbered platforms does the station have? H
At Question 3 (N53 22.689 W001 27.769):
- When in the running for best station, what place did Sheffield Station come? I
At Question 4 (N53 22.666 W001 27.851):
- The number of steps (last digit only)? J
The final location is is calculated using the following formulae:
- N53 2 [G] . [H] [D - A] [B]
- W001 2 [A] . [I + J] [E - C] [E]
You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude. Good luck!
While you're here, why not try to get on the Sheaf Square webcam! When you get to the location, either get a friend to go to http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/utc/cam01.htm and take a screenshot, or do it yourself if you have a smartphone! The webcam is updated every minute during the working day. Add a screenshot with you in the frame to your log.
