CÂNION DO GUARTELÁ
O Cânion do Guartelá, com uma extensão de 30km e desníveis de até 450m, é uma garganta formada pelo rio Iapó que aproveitou falhas e fracturas geológicas para escavar as rochas. O cânion pode ser considerado um registo da separação da América do Sul e África, e o nascimento do Oceano Atlântico Sul. Aproximadamente há 120 ou 130 milhões de anos, durante a separação dos continentes, esta região apresentava um grande arqueamento da crosta, chamado de "Arco de Ponta Grossa", fruto das forças internas do planeta que levariam à separação continental. Passaram-se milhões de anos e então o rio Iapó, no seu curso para oeste, começou a ser controlado pelas fracturas de direcção NW-SE, encaixando os principais trechos rectilíneos deste rio. A acção das águas foi a responsável pelo escavamento contínuo das rochas, cortando ao longo das fracturas todo o pacote de arenitos atá alcançar as rochas vulcânicas do Grupo Castro, formando este grande cânion.

GUARTELÁ CANYON
Extending for 30 kilometers, the Guartelá Canyon is a gorge carved up to 450m deep through geological fractures and faults by the Iapó River. Is is considered to be a record of the separation of Africa and South America, when the South Atlantic Ocean started to spread. At approximately 120 to 130 million years ago, the Guartelá region was affected by the so called "Ponta Grossa Arch", a very large structure that resulted from the action of crustal forces that lead to the continental separation. Millions of years passed, with the westward Iapó River flow being controlled by these fractures. It is along these fractures that the river´s main straight segments fit, the whole sandstone section being carved down to older underlying volcanic rocks of the Castro Group by the continuous erosional action of water, creating this big canyon.
