Speculator Loop Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

KC2WI: Stopped to check this cache in preparation for the 2016 Mid-Winter Geocaching Get-Together and found not only the cache but also its hiding place was gone. Rather than recreate the cache , I decided archive it to make room for a new one in a more picturesque spot nearby.

Geocache Description:

Pill bottle size micro hidden at a winter-accessible parking area. Cache is well hidden but could be a cache and dash for experienced Adirondack geocachers. Bring pen.

This cache, placed for the Mid-Winter Geocaching Get-Together 2014, is located at a parking area at the north end of old Route 30.

This parking area is an access point for the Speculator Mountain Bike Loop in the Speculator Tree Farm.

The parking area is plowed in the winter and is used by snowmobilers. You can reach this cache most quickly from Speculator by snowmobile on trail LP4A. There are three other caches on this trail.

Most of the mountain bike loop is part of the snowmobile trail system in the winter. A free snowmobile trail map is available at all local businesses and from the Adirondacks Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce.

After you visit the cache, take a walk down the old road at least to the bridge for a scenic view of the Sacandaga River. When there is no snow you can drive the length of old 30 and get a feel for how it was traveling between Speculator and Wells in the 1960's. In the winter it may be plowed part way for log truck access but most of it is a snowmobile trail. Driving on it with a car is definitely not recommended, even though your GPS may show it as a road.
