Geocache Description:

Located alongside busy St Kilda Road is this tribute to a famous Australian, Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop. The cache is away from the main memorial, it is the size of a film canister, and contains a pencil.  Please take care when resiting the container, so that the next searcher finds it ok. The design has changed a little from the original version as the original tree has been removed . thanks!!

Sir Ernest Edward Dunlop was born and raised in the North East of Victoria. He went on to represent Australia in Rugby and graduated with distinction in pharmacy and medicine. In 1938 he travelled to London and qualified as a surgeon. During World War 2 he worked in the Middle East, Greece and North Africa. In 1942 he was captured by the Japanese army in Java together with the hospital he was commanding. Because of his leadership ability and surgical training he was placed in charge of prisoner of war camps in Java and Singapore before eventually commanding those prisoners of war who worked on the dreaded Burma-Thailand railway, also known as the "Death Railway." One of the information plaques at the memorial states; "A courageous leader and compassionate doctor, he restored morale in those terrible prison camps and jungle hospitals. Dunlop defied his captors, gave hope to the sick and eased the anguish of the dying. He became, in the words of one of his men, "a lighthouse of sanity in a universe of madness and suffering". After the War, Weary was able to forgive his captors and dedicated himself to healing and rebuilding. His energies were also directed at community work. He received honours from Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom.
